Where did Siberian Huskies come from?
Well, as their international breed name suggests, they were actually bred by local tribes in Siberia thousands of years ago. Siberian tribes used dogs for specific reasons in their everyday life. These dogs were essential to the tribes then - as they performed tasks which included hunting with the tribesmen, scenting trails and transporting food back to their villages. Each tribe needed their dogs for different reasons, hence, breeding specific types of dogs. Most Northern dogs are similar in the sense, at one time, they were cross-bred with Arctic wolves. Through careful breeding and maintenance of pure bloodlines, thousands of years later, the "wolf" was bred out of the dog. Hence, the jackal-like appearances. The Huskies were originally bred by the Chukchi tribe. The Chukchis lived in the part closest to Alaska in Siberia. And at one time, the weather and the climate were so harsh, they had to travel further and further from their homeland to find food. The tribe lived inland, but they were forced to depend on the sea for food. Thus arose the necessity of transporting food back home over considerable distances. And the sled became that ever-important transport method. Hence, the term "sled dogs". The Husky, then known as the "Siberian Chukchis", was bred mainly for endurance rather than for speed or strength. The dogs were bred for hauling light loads at medium speeds over long distances. The "Siberian Chukchis" had to also be very energy-efficient to perform the tasks at hand, AND to have enough energy left to warm their bodies in the below-freezing temperatures. The Siberian Husky that we know today, are known to be one of the friendliest dogs, and one that is especially good with children. This has to do with how the Chukchis treated their dogs thousands of years ago. Their women and their children were the ones responsible for the dogs' daily care. The children were encouraged to play with them. And today, the Siberian Huskies are regarded as excellent family pets - very playful and always ready to make new friends. In addition to accompanying the tribesmen to the sea, the sled dogs were also used for transporting goods and trading between tribes, and hauling the tribe's possessions to a more hospitable region - if they need to. |
